Abstract

Phlebotomine sand flies are included in the order Diptera, a small insect measuring 2 to 3 mm with intense pilosity over its body. Like most Diptera, phlebotomine sand flies are holometabolous (i.e., they present in their life cycle an egg phase; a larval phase that includes four sub-stages; a pupal phase; and, finally, the adult stage). They distinguish themselves, however, from the others of this family by featuring a thinner body and longer and thin legs. In addition, their females need blood to produce eggs, and for this reason they were aggregated by taxonomists in the sub-family Phlebotominae.
