Abstract
Frond of fern and fern allies are eye-catching foliage of artistic creatures, which revamps the aesthetic beauty of the ferns. Recent survey of the florist’s shops revealed that a number of ferns, including Nephrolepis “Ghora patti fern,” are used as essential constituent in flower and foliar industry. Estimated market cost of one bunch (comprised of 50 fronds) of “Ghora patti fern” ranges from 80 to 200 Indian rupees. The price of indoor decorative ferns in earthen pot, terrarium, and hanging basket also reaches up to 3000 Indian rupees. Besides, few ferns including Diplazium esculentum “dhekiya,” Ophioglossum reticulatum “ekpatiya,” and Ampelopteris prolifera “macchinure” are ultimate foodstuff of many tribal communities and have excellent economic perspectives. Shopkeepers informed that a variety of ferns are used in preparation of bouquet, garland, and artistic arrangement of cut flowers. Survey revealed that the market demand of the “Ghora patti fern,” including many other ferns, is increasing day by day, but the supply is completely reliant on natural forest. In spite of their implication in various walks of life, unfortunately, the information about their scope in horticulture and economy are not known. Here, we attempt to delight about the source of ferns and the various steps involved to bring the fern-based product up to the end users and beneficiaries. Present contribution attempts to describe the pretext for horticulture of ferns and their scope in economic development, which can lure the farmers and rural and unprivileged people to turn up toward sustainable fern horticulture for their economic development and livelihood.
