A Runner’s Mind
The first essay begins with the idea that the mind is not an entity somehow separate from a being but is the integral aspect of becoming a human being. A runner’s mind begins with the mindful bodily engagement with its surroundings. Thus, mind and body are neither separate nor entwined entities but two inseparable aspects of the same entity. That particular notion of the inseparability of the mind and body leads to the realization that the mind is not immaterial but is manifestly material. To accept that the mind is actually materially manifest leads us to the realization that the human mind is formed through bodily movement and thus the very act of running helps lead to the emergence of our minds and our becoming human.
