Introduction: Why We Do What We Do

The foundation of this text is not the experiences of military surgeons but rather the bravery of those service members who ventured “outside the wire” into harm’s way. We, the medical professionals who have seen dismounted complex blast injuries, recognize that behind every innovation and treatment strategy are warriors who sacrificed so much. Gunnery Sergeant John Hayes’ story is startling but not very different from the thousands of warriors with similar injuries. This chapter should be seen as a culmination of the efforts and a tribute to our service members like Gunnery Sergeant John Hayes.
