The first radar at Venus was carried out as a bi-static radar experiment by the Soviet Venera 9 orbiter (1975). More sophisticated radar rode aboard the US Pioneer Venus orbiter in 1978, leading to the first global map. The highest resolutions came later from the Venera 15 and 16, which had partial coverage in the northern hemisphere, and the US Magellan orbiter, which arrived in 1990.
