Abstract

The identification and management of suicidal risk are some of the most anxiety-provoking patient care challenges for trainees to master. The unexpected suicide of a patient during residency poses additional stress on trainees. As educators, we not only teach, but we also serve as role models, mentors, and counselors when trainees experience the loss of a patient to suicide. The information presented in this chapter will serve as practical guide for educators and will review the relevant literature on psychiatry residency education about suicide risk assessment, methods of suicide prevention, and how to deal with the aftermath of a patient suicide or postvention.
