Functional Anatomy of the Aortic Valve and Dynamics of Aortic Root

Aortic Regurgitation

Abstract

The aortic valve is not a passive structure but an integral component of the complex structure of the left ventricular outflow tract and aortic root. During the cardiac cycle, this complex structure performs a sophisticated cascade of dynamic changes which all are orchestrated to maximize the effectivity of the systolic ejection of blood and simultaneously to facilitate smooth and harmless motion of the aortic leaflets both in systole and diastole. Deeper understanding of these dynamic changes during the recent period was beneficial in elaborating new concepts of physiologic and durable repair of a regurgitant aortic valve.
