Abstract
In this chapter, we will address the educational outcomes of students with an immigrant background in the Netherlands, how these outcomes have developed over time, and how this development might be related to several educational policy measures that seek to enhance the educational opportunities for students with a disadvantaged background. We begin the chapter with a short description of the main categories of immigrants in the Netherlands and provide a historical overview of the development of the share of immigrant students in education. Next, we present an overview of the outcomes of immigrant students in primary and secondary education. Both student achievement as well as attainment indicators are considered in describing the development of immigrant students’ position over time. After summarizing the main findings, we critically discuss several relevant educational policy measures that might provide some understanding of the development of immigrant students’ position in the past and the current situation. Finally, we critically comment on the effectiveness and efficiency of the Dutch educational equity policy.
