Field Substitution and Sequential Sampling Method

Abstract

A solution is proposed to the problem of non-response in the implementation and analysis of a survey, correcting total non-response through a sequential process of field substitution. Substitutions in surveys are often a useful procedure when there is a framework (sample frame) of reference for all elements of the population and when substitution is selected randomly. Through this sequential procedure, the probability of an element being included in the sample is updated in accordance with the selection sequence. A range of simulations are also carried out to compare the results of the proposed method to an ideal situation of zero non-response and against two other estimators calculated from the incomplete sample. The simulations were run on populations with three different distributions.
