Abstract

Throughout the 1870s and early 1880s, while Morley was actively involved in childrearing, he wrote several significant historical studies and biographies. Each of these texts explore in their respective ways aspects of parenting or parenthood. This chapter analyzes several of these texts to consider how Morley’s views on the relationship between parent and child became more philosophically informed as he immersed himself in the writings of eighteenth-century French intellectuals and penned his famous treatise on liberal ethics.
