Abstract
In this chapter, we deal with the issue that many common situations that repeatedly arise when doing conceptual modelling can be codified as patterns and applied when necessary. We introduce the notion of modelling pattern, which is taken from the architecture and software engineering worlds, and involves a known problem, an application context, and a suggested solution. Then, we explore various kinds of patterns and document the most common ones. We start with hierarchical patterns for aggregation and subsumption, and then, we move to cover composite and state patterns.
