Abstract
Training hernia surgery has become more and more challenging today. The increasingly high number of inguinal and ventral/incisional repairs, new surgical approaches, innovative techniques, both open and laparoscopic, and a huge number of prosthetic materials and medical devices available to the market, together with the complexity of patient population, require in fact a specialized surgeon with a deep knowledge in hernia surgery. According to these concerns, the Italian School of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery was created in 2008, first in Europe, to train surgery residents and surgeons interested to develop a special knowledge in hernia surgery.
The school is articulated in three levels: (a) a basic course, (b) clinical stages of hands-on training, and (c) documented research and scientific updating in hernia surgery. At the end of this track, participants receive a certificate of Expert in Hernia Surgery, issued by the ISHAWS.
Eight years of activity have demonstrated a high level of participants’ satisfaction, even if it has been recorded the need to implement practical activities. Despite that, the experience has revealed to be positive, contributing to mature the concept of standardized hernia surgery training, according to the Austrian German School, experience and the suggestion of the EHS to create a model to develop training courses at national level.
