The Early Challenges



Newton’s calculus of fluxions and the differential calculus of Leibniz had hardly seen the light of day when they were already criticised. This critique could not stop the triumph of the new infinitesimal mathematics, of course; too big were the successes at which one arrived at in consequently applying this new kind of mathematics to problems of physics. As we have seen already the brothers Jacob und John Bernoulli established the calculus of variations on the Continent.
