Abstract
Pericardiocentesis is mostly performed for drainage of accumulated pericardial fluid that compromizes cardiac output (cardiac tamponade). An echo-guided puncture is a safe and rapid technique for relief of this potentially life-threatening problem. Depending on the cause of the tamponade, a drain may be left in the pericardial space.
