It Takes Two to Tango Across Montevideo and California: Carolina De Robertis
Born to Uruguayan parents and raised in England and Switzerland, Carolina De Robertis spent her formative years in Los Angeles, California, from the age of ten. She discusses how she immersed herself in literature at a young age by reading in English while also having a familiarity with other languages. She explains the importance of returning to her cultural roots in Montevideo, Uruguay, through memory, talking to people on return journeys, and acknowledging the human rights of victims who survived the dictatorship, all of which have made their marks in her critically acclaimed and award-winning novels. As an author, editor, educator, and translator, De Robertis is conscientious of doing justice to the representation of gender, race, and immigration in her literary works and in her social advocacy.
