Abstract
In the Introduction Bray outlines the major arguments of the book. Having discussed Jane Austen’s enduring popularity, he challenges the traditional critical views that she has no style, or alternatively that she is a miniaturist, concerned only with the meticulous precision of her art. He argues instead that her style is varied and dynamic, and that it demonstrates a lively engagement with the key political questions of the age. The Introduction also situates the book within the discipline of stylistics, and provides summaries of the chapters which follow.
