The Fastest Way Across the Seas: Cyberspace Operations and Cybersecurity in the Indo-Pacific
This chapter takes a unique perspective related to cyber and the sea. Here, the cyber domain is both an economic source and a source for spreading ideas and influence across both physical and virtual arenas. It also poses a significant security challenge for all nations, including the physical security of the cables that traverse the world’s oceans, deep beneath the surface. The chapter argues that nowhere is this nexus more important than in the development of secure power projection capabilities—especially in naval power, which will play such a key part in the region’s strategic future and in the successful implementation of the United States and its allies’ strategic investments. India, South Korea, Japan, and the United States must harden their naval systems in anticipation of any contingency with China.
