Abstract
Spinal growth involves a myriad of constantly evolving anatomical, biological, and mechanical factors that should be evaluated in detail when treating a child with a spine pathology. Orthopedic surgeons must be aware of the different tools and guidelines available to treat a patient with a skeletally immature spine. Various authors have published techniques to evaluate and estimate the growth of the spine and assess the effect of surgery according to different parameters such as age, pelvic measurements, and chest dimensions. More recent literature reports the effect of growth-friendly surgery in relationship with the sagittal spine length and the true spine length in three dimensions. This chapter presents the case of a 6-year-old boy with neurofibromatosis who was treated with a growth-friendly surgery according to contemporary principles and techniques of spinal deformity evaluation and management in the skeletally immature population.
