Abstract
The 1965 violence deeply impacted Indonesian society and scholars are now only beginning to understand the multiple ways in which its effects are still felt today. Beyond the physical violence there were also widespread purges of staff from the civil service. This included purges of institutions of higher education. Through a close analysis of the anti-Communist purges that took place at the once revolutionary Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Wahid demonstrates how the violence disrupted and dramatically changed the focus and structure of Indonesian universities.
