Abstract

To date most research on the 30 September Movement has focused on what this movement did in Jakarta with some attention also to actions of support in Central Java. It is however not well known even in Bali today that the Movement also had support in Bali. Using interviews and court records from the Extraordinary Military Tribunal in Denpasar, Matsuno provides the first detailed examination of how a group of young officers in the regional military command in Bali backed the 30 September Movement. It investigates why the command’s support was kept relatively secret at the time and how blame was instead quickly directed at the PKI.
