Promotion of Physical Activity for Older People with Cardiorespiratory Conditions

The Palgrave Handbook of Ageing and Physical Activity Promotion

Abstract

Physical activity participation can achieve clinical and lifestyle benefits for older adults with chronic cardiorespiratory disease, yet regular participation and maintenance of gains is challenging. This chapter will consider common strategies employed to promote physical activity participation in this group. These include face-to-face exercise training, most often in the form of structured exercise rehabilitation classes; physical activity counselling; the use of a physical activity diary; or internet-mediated delivery. Effective and acceptable methods to encourage increased physical activity participation require a focus on individual needs and incorporation of behavioural change strategies including self-monitoring and goal-setting.
