Abstract

Leading surgical units in today’s business environment requires a grasp of financial reporting tools and budgetary processes. While most units and departments will have nonphysician business managers to aid the departmental leadership, being able to understand the subtle nuances of financial reports is critical. This is akin to understanding the data when writing a scientific manuscript. This chapter serves to provide the background for understanding basic finance as it applies to surgical units. Business plan development will also be discussed.
