The Non-Native Speaker Language Teacher as Model Bilingual

In this chapter, I introduce the idea of the language teacher as a model bilingual. In this way, I move away from the native/non-native dichotomy and look towards an approach which encompasses the individual as a multilingual speaker and an interlanguage mediator. I consider questions of the teacher’s target language awareness and ability to explain language phenomena. I discuss the role of the teacher as the learners’ primary source of target language input and explore to what extent the non-native speaker language teacher is permitted to make errors. Does this constitute acceptable non-native speaker behaviour or is it unconscionable for the learners’ possible sole point of contact with the target language to be flawed? I explore how a teacher makes decisions around code choice in the classroom and discuss how these choices differ from everyday bilingual situations.
