This chapter “Dogs Left Behind in the Exclusion Zone” investigates the plight of an estimated 11,600 dogs that lived in the exclusion zone before the nuclear meltdowns—how they suffered from hunger and thirst during the initial stage of abandonment, how most of them eventually succumbed and died, and how some of them survived on the radioactive land—as well as the rescue operations for dogs launched by small animal protection groups.
