This chapter “Government Animal Relief Operations in the Exclusion Zone” examines the policy (and the lack thereof) of the Japanese government on animals in Fukushima. The government designated an area of 20-kilometer radius from the nuclear power station as the exclusion zone and evacuated residents to temporary shelters outside the zone. However, it did not undertake animal rescue operations in earnest, but conducted only pro forma rescue operations for a short period of time, leaving countless animals starving to death.
