Abstract
This chapter introduces the setting of South Korea. It begins with general demographic information, describes the unique cultural and historical factors that have shaped the development of the education system, and summarises the impact of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learning and testing within this context. Overall, this chapter seeks to provide background to better understanding the type of sociocultural, historical, and economic factors that might influence the effect that tests and testing have on learning. Many of these factors are revisited in Chaps. 9, 10 and 11.
