Abstract
The terms self-compassion and sport seem like they do not belong together. My first thought considering self-compassion and sport was: Isn’t sport only about being tough, being courageous, and passionately (or stoically) investing mind, body, and soul into the moment? Yes, for us, this is what sport and performance is all about. The question is, how do you help yourself get into such a focused, engaged, and hopefully passionate state of mind, of being? I (Amy) have spent the past twenty years trying to get better at helping athletes and performers do just this. And I have realized that there is another pathway to dealing with sport distress than just, don’t think and do it. Just be mentally tough. Because, truthfully, some athletes some of the time simply cannot do this. Sometimes they can’t tough it out, they can be overwhelmed by the unwanted feelings and thoughts. And when they can’t, what is the answer?
