Abstract
This chapter studies in detail how the French connected abolitionism in the colonies with labor dependence in the mainland. It presents discussion and the limits of the French abolitionism since the revolution of 1789; it then presents in detail the debates of the 1830s and the 1840s leading to the abolition of slavery in 1848. It presents a completely new connection between the evolution of labor rules in France and in its colonies in 1848 and its aftermath. The second part of this chapter investigates labor practices, coercion and labor resistance in Reunion Island. Finally, this chapter advances a new brand history of the impact of the environment (cyclones), planters’ choices and French policies on the living conditions of the indentured immigrants.
