Abstract
The year 1987 was a turning point in the Korean history, as Korea transformed into a democratic society. The end of the Cold War brought about a structural change in the international order. Liberalization and democratization spread all over the world. The Korean government abolished the notorious Framework Act on Media, which meant that the media was no longer based on the authoritarian model. Economic growth and an increase in advertising income promoted the industrialization of the media, with the media industry growing in line with economic development. New media firms and civic media were established. Labour unions were formed in media companies, which greatly influenced media policy. Civil society expanded its engagement and influence in the media industry.
