School Leadership Is Partnership Dependent

Abstract

Schools cannot and do not operate in silos. And nor can and do school leaders. Schools rely heavily upon a range of internal and external partners/partnerships in order to be successful—from parent associations to industry (Miller, P. Exploring School Leadership in England and the Caribbean: New Insights from a Comparative Approach. London: Bloomsbury, 2016). Furthermore, increasingly, schools are operating in networked and/or other learning communities, both internationally and nationally, as they try to provide students with a “unique” learning experience. School leaders realise that part of being entrepreneurial is also being partnership orientated. The main finding of this chapter is that schools/school leaders engage in largely two types of partnerships (pragmatic and strategic) where pragmatic partnerships are chosen primarily for a short-term or one off goal, whereas strategic partnerships are chosen primarily for their potential to bring longer-term benefits to a school.
