Abstract
In this part, the author starts by reviewing the theory of the culture industry particularly according to the view of Adorno and Horkheimer. Then he refers to Marcuse and discusses his ideas in Eros and Civilization and One Dimensional Man. Since part of the domination of the culture industry is about the people who are attracted and manipulated by it, the author reviews Erich Fromm’s theories of human needs and the social character which capitalist society creates. Before starting his discussions about Baudrillard, as the main theorist in this book, he takes a look at Veblen’s theory of conspicuous consumption to better understand Baudrillard’s ideas in his early works. After that, he starts to review and discuss Baudrillard’s theories in The System of Objects, The Consumer Society, For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign, The Mirror of Production, Symbolic Exchange and Death, Simulacra and Simulation, and In the Shadow of the Silent Majorities.
