Reading remains a central activity for teachers and students. This chapter brings together the interrogation of texts and the questioning of self. First, Sullivan surveys the purposes that govern and guide reading. Second, three types of integration (personal, social and curricular) are distinguished, with personal integration given priority. In part three, differences and tensions between academic and religious reading are highlighted; it is suggested that poetry can mediate between academic and religious reading, ‘disrupting’ expectations about truth and extending students’ repertoire of reading skills. Part four shows how university teachers might help their students to become engaged readers. Finally, the author outlines the implications for teachers if they are to be equipped to promote such engagement by their students.
