Impacts of the Water Resources Variability on Cereal Yields in the Region of Souss-Massa Southern Morocco

Abstract

The development of an intensive agriculture in Souss-Massa basin is leading to an overexploitation of the principal resource i.e. groundwater. Future long-term evolution of precipitation and of crop yields beneath climate change needs to be built on reliable information. In this work, we investigate archives under the authority of public organizations to explore observed meteorological data and crop productions in Souss-Massa region. We examine linkage between seasonal variation of precipitation and of crop yields. We also analyze the impacts of extreme events of drought and heavy rainfall on crop productions.
