Abstract
Although debilitating, ankle arthritis is not as common as hip or knee arthritis, the vast majority of ankle arthritis is post-traumatic in nature. Differential diagnoses include ankle joint infections, inflammatory arthritis, osteochondral lesions of the talus, loose bodies within the joint, and ankle joint mechanically induced synovitis. When the physical examination and standard imaging fail to provide a definitive diagnosis, advanced imaging may be used. Nonoperative treatments can be very effective in the long-term management of ankle arthritis. When conservative measures fail, there are a host of operative options, which can provide definitive treatment.
