Abstract
This chapter introduces the book International Perspectives on Translation, Education, and Innovation in Japanese and Korean Societies. Extending on essential context offered earlier in the Preface, it begins with a general overview of the current sociopolitical situation in East Asia, followed by a concise discussion of historical background for consideration of the book’s three intersecting themes in relation to Japan and the Korean peninsula: Translation, education, and innovation. This is followed by an overview of each of the 19 contributed chapters, which are grouped into six parts – (1) Keynotes on Cultural Change, (2) Translational Issues in Literature, (3) Analyses of Korean and Japanese Languages, (4) Language Education, (5) Innovation in the Professions, and (6) The Arts in Innovative Societies – followed by a Conclusion chapter entitled Cultural Translation and Social Change in East Asia. The present chapter ends with discussion of five additional unifying themes that appear across several of the book’s chapters: nature and sustainability, form and meaning, aesthetics, humor, and technologies.
