Abstract

His plans for the Broadway Theatre having failed, Hamblin throws his final energy into a wide, desperate variety of performance genres at the Bowery. He introduces his newest (and last) protégée, pixyish fifteen-year-old Maggie Mitchell, who will go on to become one of the century’s biggest stars. He engages temperamental star Lola Montez, who soon leaves when they quarrel. Hamblin rapidly descends into mania and death at age fifty-two on January 8, 1853. His legacy and an epilogue summarizing the later lives of Shaw and their children close the book.
