Abstract

This chapter describes the development of flexibility through my personal involvement in researching this complex concept. It starts with flexibility in manufacturing systems where the early researchers modeled Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) from a bottom-up perspective (flexibility of elements, system and aggregate flexibility). It continues with other modeling perspectives of flexibility, such as flexibility in logistic systems, flexibility of generic objects and supply chains flexibility
