Abstract
As the number of persons aged 65 years and older continues to rise, the need for appropriate assessment and treatment of memory complaints will become ever more important. Early identification of cognitive impairment and competency in its differential diagnosis is a skill that providers will need in their daily practice as delay in diagnosis can have significant social and economic implications. Understanding the continuum as it relates to memory from the normal physiologic changes associated with aging to the debilitating dementing processes, this section provides a framework for the initial evaluation, differential diagnosis, and management of patients with memory loss.
