Abstract
Rashes are common and diagnostically challenging conditions encountered in outpatient and emergency room settings. It is important to understand the characteristics differentiating rashes in order to make correct diagnoses and treatments. Of utmost importance is quickly recognizing life-threatening conditions so that prompt treatment can be initiated. An effective approach to diagnosing rashes is to first categorize the rash based on its reaction pattern and from there generate a good, broad differential diagnosis. Further testing, including skin biopsies, may be warranted in some cases, and referral to a dermatologist may be needed for complicated dermatologic conditions.
