William Golding’s Mother

  • Judy Carver

Much has been written about William Golding’s relationship with his father, Alec, who was indeed a fascinating man. His mother, Mildred, is a more shadowy figure. Using many of my father’s unpublished autobiographical pieces, including reminiscences in his unpublished journals, I shall try to bring my grandmother a little out of the shadows. Of course, I have my own memories of her—she died when I was fifteen. The home where she lived for nearly half a century—in Marlborough, Wiltshire—is still very vivid in my mind, and provides me with copious illustrations of my grandparents’ contrasting personalities.
