Abstract

St Philip was the fifth apostle of Jesus. It was he who asked Jesus how on earth he was going to feed the five thousand, and in this he was not unlike my mother who spent much of her life worrying how to feed people, though without the benefit of miracles. My mother died of a long and miserable cancer, but I have no doubt that had the opportunity arisen she would have preferred to be crucified upside down like St Philip whose tormentors offered to cut him off his cross after hearing him preach very persuasively in this inverted position, but he refused. My mother could also be very stubborn.
