Mrs. Gabbet’s Desk

Abstract

My mother is alone in the house, a couple of hundred yards from where I now sit, in a structure we call ‘the barn’, which in truth is more of a loft—a single, large room with a small kitchen, a bathroom, a wood burning stove, many windows that look out onto the road and the marshes beyond. Over the years it has been rented out to tenants, and before that housed family members in various states of transition, and now holds a lot of personal effects and office supplies and photographs that we do not know what to do with.
