Abstract

The concluding chapter considers the first days of the Macron executive, in particular the problems that beset the Philippe government within days of its formation, the striking monarchical approach Macron adopted in his presidential style and the immediate decline in his poll ratings during the first 100 days. Macron’s capacity to reform French political and socio-economic life relies upon his capacity to drive through radical change in a number of policy areas. His use of ordonnance legislation and expectation of parliamentary group loyalty is viable only as long as internal party pressures and external social criticism of the government and the president remain managed. The extent to which Macron manages this will indicate whether his political reformation can make a lasting change to politics in France.
