Abstract

This chapter focuses on musician Kristin Hersh in order to establish best practices for artist–audience engagement, as well as better understand what drives mutually beneficial revenue-generating communities. Interviews with Hersh and her manager illuminate themes focused on developing an artist–audience-specific strategy, engaging listeners through a humanizing and transparent approach, and organic community building through interactivity. Additionally, a discourse analysis of Hersh’s digital presence, including her website, Twitter account, and online forum, provides further insight into negotiation of the digital landscape. Hersh provides music and more, while her community provides the funding and valuable participation that allows for her enduring cultural contribution. This chapter articulates artist strategies most likely to resonate with music audiences and grounds the audience data in relationship to successful artist practice.
