Abstract
The arrival in the White House of President Richard Nixon in January 1969 signalled a radical change in direction in the space program. Once the Moon landing was achieved, some change was inevitable and, as noted in Chapter 2, NASA had taken the precaution of considering the post-Apollo future some years earlier. To those who chose to read the signals, like Homer Newell, the new Republican administration was committed to an attack on inflation and controlling or reducing federal spending. This would include the space budget – indeed, the big question in the minds of space planners was how far Nixon would let the budget drop.
