Abstract

A general method for balance of planar mechanisms is presented in this paper. In order to determine the force that causes unbalanced, called shaking forces, the dynamics equations of motion for mechanisms are formulated systematically using the Davies’ method. The formulation leads to an optimization scheme for the mass distribution to improve the dynamic performances of mechanisms. The method is illustrated with a slider-crank mechanism. Balancing of shaking forces shows a significant improvement in the dynamic performances compared to that of the original mechanisms.
