Abstract
Neglect is the most common form of animal abuse reported within the United States, and it represents an increasing number of postmortem submissions to veterinary forensic pathologists. This chapter discusses the common presentations and forms of companion animal neglect and their related postmortem findings. The chapter stresses a team approach when handling neglect cases, to ensure that experience in postmortem techniques contributes to the overall needs of the case. Professionals in crime scene investigation and processing, environmental handling, and social and mental welfare issues are often essential to the successful investigation and prosecution of animal neglect.
