Book cover Evidence-Based Emergency Imaging

Abstract

There are many causes of small and large bowel obstruction, which differ considerably between adults and children. That being said, in almost all cases of bowel obstruction, radiological imaging is an essential component of the diagnostic work-up, and there are many different imaging modalities to choose from. The purpose of this chapter is to critically assess the evidence behind the use of the different imaging modalities for investigating and diagnosing the different types of small and large bowel obstruction in adults. We aim to offer guidance for a rational approach to diagnostic work-up using evidence-based algorithms where available.
