Abstract

The United Nations has developed five general multilateral treaties, which provide a basic framework for activities in outer space. The first is the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, which entered into force in 1967. Following this four more treaties were adopted to elaborate on the text contained in the Outer Space Treaty:

  1. 1.

    Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space, entered into force on 3 December 1968 (Rescue Agreement);

  2. 2.

    Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects, entered into force on 1 September 1972 (Liability Convention);

  3. 3.

    Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space, entered into force on 15 September 1976 (Registration Convention);

  4. 4.

    Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, entered into force on 11 July 1984 (Moon Agreement).
