Abstract

The word statistics was first employed as a synonym for “numerical descriptions of societies” in 19th century England and France. In those times, no inferences had yet been made about the properties of individual people. Only in the late 19th century did statistics experience a boom, which coincided with the rising use of mathematical methods in the natural sciences.
